If you live in New Brunswick, you probably do not expect the ground to move beneath your feet. However, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook parts of northern New Brunswick and Quebec on Thursday morning.
According to a report from CBC News, Earthquakes Canada confirmed the tremor caused no damage. The event still left many residents surprised.

Residents React to the Tremor
Campbellton Mayor Michel Soucy was working on the third floor of town hall when the quake hit. He initially thought a car struck the building.
“All of the employees came out of their offices and said ‘Oh my god, what just happened?'” Soucy told CBC. He described the sensation as a quick vibration in his body that lasted only a fraction of a second.
Other locals shared similar experiences. Karen Dougas Cyr felt the walls of her living room shake. Jim MacDonald and Adrienne Findlay noticed their house and porch swing moving while they ate breakfast.
Record Breaking Seismic Activity
Earthquakes Canada received over 1,200 reports from people who felt the quake by Thursday afternoon. Residents as far away as Fredericton and Moncton reported feeling the tremor.
Chris Boucher is a seismic analyst with Earthquakes Canada. He noted this is the largest earthquake ever recorded in the lower St. Lawrence seismic zone. He added that earthquakes usually happen further east of this specific area.
What to Do During an Earthquake
Boucher explained that falling items cause most earthquake related injuries and fatalities in Canada. Collapsing buildings are rarely the culprit. If you find yourself in an earthquake, you must drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Earthquakes Canada encourages anyone who feels a tremor to submit a report on their official website.
