Chasing Capital in Toronto
New Brunswick wants a piece of a massive financial pie. Premier Susan Holt is in Toronto this week pitching $30 billion in capital investment opportunities to global asset managers and domestic business leaders. The Canadian Press reports that hundreds of executives gathered in Toronto on Monday for the first national investment summit in Canada.

If you live in New Brunswick, these investments directly impact your local economy. The provincial government highlights eight major projects. These include a new nuclear development, the Sisson Mine, a proposed data centre, and an expansion to the Belledune port. Government officials say these projects represent $30 billion in opportunities and show the province’s potential in critical sectors.
Strategic Meetings and Pitching Value
Holt is holding closed door meetings to pitch the value of New Brunswick. She notes domestic players make good partners alongside foreign investors. Bank of Montreal Financial Group CEO Darryl White is on her meeting list.
“We’re talking about the kind of growth that New Brunswick is seeing and making sure that he’s aware of the kind of mineral assets that we’re developing,” Holt told The Canadian Press.
The government wants to reinvigorate the mining sector in the Maritimes. Canada and its allies need secure sources of critical minerals for semiconductors and batteries. Holt says her team connects potential investors with the right government departments or private firms after initial conversations. She emphasizes the importance of showing investors a reliable and politically stable jurisdiction.
Expert Skepticism
Not everyone shares this optimism. Herb Emery, political science department chair at the University of New Brunswick, calls the summit great political theatre.
“It does advertise and aggregate the range of opportunities that the world could be looking at in Canada,” Emery said. “But it doesn’t get around our fundamental problem, which is for over a decade Canada has been seen as a poor return place to invest.”
Emery questions why the premier needs to act as a marketer if the energy and mineral projects are as great as the government claims. He adds that even with an influx of cash, the projects generate GDP too far down the road to immediately fix budget deficits.
Holt does not expect immediate deals. She views these meetings as first connection points to evaluate fit. She promises to share the outcomes with New Brunswickers soon.
