According to a report from CTV News, the province is splitting the funds across three specific projects.
A New Place to Cool Off
The largest portion of the funding goes to a brand new splash pad. The province awarded $250,000 to build this facility at the old Ian Baillie Primary School site. This gives families a dedicated outdoor space to beat the heat during the summer months.
Upgraded Sports and Community Facilities
The remaining funds target local sports and community gathering spots. Dr. Losier Middle School receives $50,000 to upgrade its basketball and tennis courts. The school will also add a new pickleball court to meet the growing demand for the sport.
The Miramichi Kinsmen Club receives $63,000. This money pays for an exterior facelift at the Beaverbrook Kin Centre.
Local Leaders Welcome the Investment
Provincial and municipal leaders say these upgrades directly benefit residents. Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage notes the importance of these spaces.
“Investing in community infrastructure helps to create places where people can come together, stay active and enjoy their communities,” LePage said. “The new splash pad will give families and residents another place to enjoy the outdoors, while investments at Dr. Losier Middle School and the Beaverbrook Kin Centre will strengthen recreation and meeting opportunities.”
Miramichi Mayor Veronique Arsenault echoed this sentiment.
“This is great news for families across Miramichi,” Arsenault said. “This is an opportunity for generations to continue to make wonderful memories together and the perfect spot to cool off during those hot summer days.”
