Fredericton city council voted to expropriate the land for the school and future housing earlier this year. According to CTV News, this new facility replaces George Street Middle School.
What the New School Offers
The upcoming building accommodates 810 students. This makes it about 50 percent larger than the current George Street Middle School. Students and staff get access to upgraded spaces.
The facility features 32 standard classrooms and eight specialized classrooms. Physical education classes use two full gymnasiums. The school also includes a black box theatre, a library, and a cafeteria. A dedicated space for First Nations language and culture provides important educational resources for students.
Timeline and Budget Details
The provincial government approved the project in the 2026 to 2027 capital budget. Planning and design work takes up $13.8 million of that budget during the first fiscal year.
Construction begins in the 2027 to 2028 season. The doors open for students between 2030 and 2031.
Replacing a Century Old Landmark
George Street Middle School currently hosts 741 students in grades six through eight. The building is aging and lacks the space required for modern educational demands.
Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Claire Johnson highlighted the need for the upgrade.
“The current school has served the community for over a century,” Johnson said in a news release. “We are committed to making sure that students have what they need to succeed. Through this project, students will benefit from a modern, accessible learning environment designed to meet their needs today and into the future.”
