High-Tech Intervention Stops Vehicle Theft
Two 18-year-old men were arrested this week following a vehicle theft that ended with a high-tech twist. The stolen 2024 Subaru Outback was remotely disabled by its manufacturer, bringing a police pursuit to a decisive halt on the city’s west side.
According to a media release from the Saint John Police, the incident began on the evening of January 14, 2026, when the vehicle was reported stolen from the Charlotte Street South area. Officers located the Subaru but the driver fled multiple times when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
With assistance from the Saint John Street Crime Integrated Enforcement Unit, police tracked the vehicle to a parking lot off Manawagonish Road. At that point, Subaru intervened remotely, shutting the vehicle off and preventing any further escape by car.
A Chase on Foot and Paw
With the vehicle immobilized, the two occupants fled on foot. Police apprehended the driver after a brief chase. The passenger, however, attempted to hide from authorities.
The Saint John Police deployed Police Service Dog Arlo to track the second suspect. The K9 unit successfully located the man hiding inside a shrink-wrapped boat at a business on Fairville Boulevard.
Both individuals were taken into custody. Police have since released the accused, who are scheduled to appear in court on April 9, 2026.
