Port Saint John is kicking off its cruise season more than two months ahead of schedule. Virgin Voyages Valiant Lady arrives this Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. after sailing from New York.
Weather conditions forced the ship to divert from its original destination of Bermuda. Now over 2,000 passengers will spend the day exploring Saint John.
City Rallies for Early Arrival
The sudden arrival requires a fast response from local businesses. Becky Knox is the port manager of public affairs and executive communications. She says the port and its tourism partners are working hard to provide a great experience.
“We are really pleased about the response of our tourism ecosystem so far,” Knox said. “They’ve done a lot of work to ensure that they are opening earlier for tourists this season.”
Port workers prepared terminals, placed fenders into the water, and calculated the high water window to accommodate the ship. Knox notes this is the second time one of the Virgin Voyages ships has visited the port. She calls the cruise line innovative and says they are flipping the cruise industry on its head.
What to Expect Uptown
If you are heading uptown, you will see passengers enjoying the Saint John City Market, checking out the Fundy Quay developments, and taking guided trips with Aquila Tours. The port Welcome Crew is on site to hand out free city maps and provide recommendations.
Some seasonal attractions need more time to prepare. Ray Gracewood is the owner of Area 506. He confirmed the container village will maintain its original opening date in the middle of May.
The Valiant Lady departs on Thursday at 4 a.m. Port Saint John expects its next scheduled cruise ship arrival in June.
