A massive federal investment is coming to 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown. The federal government recently announced over $1 billion in new spending to rebuild military capabilities. This brings a unique opportunity to New Brunswick but also introduces significant hurdles. Base Commander Col. Paul Williams says the community needs time to prepare for the incoming changes, according to a recent report from CBC News.

Modernizing Aging Infrastructure
The funds target training infrastructure and new ground based air defence systems. Much of the current base dates back to the late 1950s and early 1960s. These older buildings cannot handle modern military equipment. Williams notes that today’s equipment is considerably larger than what the military used decades ago.
“What we foresee is a fair amount of building modern infrastructure,” Williams said.
Housing a Growing Population
The army plans to send 2,000 more soldiers to the base over the next decade. You will see an influx of 200 to 300 new people each year as renovations finish and new equipment arrives. Williams clarifies this brings the base back to normal staffing levels after years of shortages.
“It is not actually growth. That is just achieving what we would consider to be normal,” he said.
Housing these soldiers presents a clear problem. New Brunswick already faces a severe housing shortage. Base officials plan to build apartment buildings and single family homes to accommodate the new arrivals. This construction requires skilled tradespeople. Williams hopes the base avoids competing with provincial projects like hospitals and nursing homes.
“It is my belief that if the housing program is predicted to take five years, if that ends up taking seven years, but we managed to share resources to make our community stronger than that is what it is going to have to take,” Williams said.
Healthcare and Family Support
These 2,000 soldiers bring spouses and children. While soldiers receive healthcare directly on the base, their families rely on the provincial healthcare system. This adds pressure to an already strained network. Williams acknowledges these difficulties exist across the country. Base leadership maintains open dialogue with government officials to give the province time to prepare. The base also plans to expand its daycare capacity for military families.
