The New Brunswick government is partnering with Helmets to Hardhats Canada to help veterans and military members transition into the skilled trades. The province is investing $275,000 into the organization Skills Edge program. This initiative provides employment readiness support, outreach, and clear pathways into apprenticeship and certification for the military community.
If you are a former soldier, reservist, cadet, or a military family member, this program offers a direct route into the unionized construction sector.
Addressing the Labour Shortage
The construction sector in New Brunswick faces ongoing labour shortages and an aging workforce. With the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown and several reserve units located nearby, the province has a strong pool of disciplined individuals ready for new careers.
Post Secondary Education and Training Minister Jean Claude D’Amours, who also serves as the minister responsible for military affairs, highlighted the importance of this initiative.
“We are going to need thousands of new employees in the skilled trades industry in the coming years,” D’Amours said. “Helping former soldiers, reservists and their families launch a second career in a critical industry is an exciting opportunity.”
Building the Workforce
The Skills Edge program connects job ready individuals with employers who need them. James Hogarth, executive director of Helmets to Hardhats, noted that the investment recognizes the unique skills military members bring to the civilian workforce.
“By supporting clear pathways into unionized construction careers, we are opening doors to meaningful, long term employment for those who have served our country,” Hogarth said.
Rick Smith, chair of the Apprenticeship and Occupational Certification Board, echoed this sentiment. He emphasized that participants from the military community understand job site expectations, prioritize safety, and commit to staying in the industry.
“We are always looking for job ready people, and Skills Edge helps deliver that,” Smith said.
