The 2029 Canada Summer Games are coming to New Brunswick and rowing is officially on the roster. If you live in the Saint John region or the City of Moncton, you will see up to 4,600 athletes, coaches and managers arrive to compete on the national stage.
National Competition Returns
The Canada Games Council announced the complete program of 17 sports for the 2029 edition. Rowing Canada Aviron confirmed the inclusion of rowing, marking a significant milestone for the sport in our province.
The Canada Games serve as a crucial step for young athletes. They offer rowers the chance to represent their province and experience high performance competition. This event builds the foundation for future national and international success.
Saint John Rowing History
Saint John has a rich history with the Canada Games. The city previously hosted the Summer Games in 1985. This legacy continues to inspire local athletes and coaches.
“Rowing is a late entry sport, and Saint John hosting the 1985 Canada Games was the catalyst for my lifelong passion as an athlete, coach, and administrator. With New Brunswick’s rich rowing history, I’ve seen thousands of athletes gain the opportunity to compete. Some locally, others internationally for Canada. All have learned teamwork, dedication, and hard work, while gaining a deeper respect for the natural environment we train and compete on,” shares John Oxley, a 1985 Canada Games athlete and former coach.
Developing Young Athletes
Securing rowing for the 2029 games required significant effort and collaboration across the country.
“The inclusion of rowing in the 2029 program is a testament to the strength of the sport across the country and the continued commitment of provincial rowing associations to developing the next generation of Canadian rowers,” says Jennifer Fitzpatrick, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Rowing Canada Aviron. “A tremendous amount of collaboration and advocacy went into securing rowing’s return to the Games, and RCA looks forward to working with provincial partners and the Host Society to deliver an outstanding rowing competition in New Brunswick.”
The 2029 event marks the third time New Brunswick hosts the Canada Games. Following the 1985 games in Saint John, the province also hosted the 2003 Winter Games in Bathurst and Campbellton. Officials will announce exact competition dates and venue details in the coming months.
