The Saint John Jewish Historical Museum marks four decades of preserving and sharing the rich history of the local Jewish community. Founded in 1986, the institution continues to connect locals and global visitors with stories that stretch back to the 1700s.

Preserving a Shrinking Community
Between the 1920s and 1960s, Saint John was home to 200 to 300 Jewish families. As younger generations grew up and relocated, the population declined. By 1986, only about 50 families remained. Marcia Koven recognized the need to protect this heritage. She founded the museum to ensure future generations understand the deep roots of the Jewish community in the Port City.
Deep Roots in Saint John
The history of Jewish residents in Saint John begins long before the 20th century. David Gabel arrived with the Loyalists after the American Revolution in 1783, making him the first known Jewish resident. Decades later, in 1858, Solomon and Alice Hart settled in the city. Historians recognize the Harts as the founders of the region’s Jewish community.

A Global Audience
Today, the museum attracts visitors from all over the world. Katherine Biggs Craft, the executive director and curator, notes that people seek meaningful connections when they walk through the doors. “The museum was founded as a way to remember a once thriving Jewish community in Saint John,” Biggs Craft told CTV News. She adds that technology breaks down language barriers for international tourists arriving on cruise ships. In its 40 years, the museum has welcomed more than 142,000 visitors.
Looking to the Future
The museum continues to evolve. Lorie Cohen Hackett, president of the Saint John Jewish Historical Society, describes it as a living institution. “We’re growing,” Hackett said. “We’ve brought in art exhibits and the film festival and book readings. We keep adding to the museum.”
