Instead of lounging on a beach this summer, one New Brunswick family took on a massive physical challenge. A group of 10 family members spanning three generations hiked Mount Katahdin in Maine. The hikers ranged in age from eight to 75.

Taking on Mount Katahdin

Organizer Michael Doiron said reaching the summit was not the primary goal. He focused on spending quality time with his family.

Eight-year-old David Doiron found the experience memorable because his grandfather joined the climb. The hike tested everyone. Eleven-year-old Kirk Carsenauld felt relieved once the hardest part ended. David also had a memorable finish, noting he threw up twice upon reaching the bottom.

A Grandfather’s Journey

Seventy-five-year-old Peter Arsenault did not originally plan to join the trip. He gladly accepted the invitation and felt safe throughout the journey. His sons shadowed him on the way up and the way down.

Peter noted the trip highlighted the power of family teamwork. Baxter State Park offers a rustic environment with no electricity, running water, heat, garbage cans, or cell service. Visitors must pack out everything they bring in. Without modern distractions, the family focused entirely on each other.

Michael treasures the memories made along the trail. Watching his son and father-in-law climb over large boulders inspired him. He hopes to recreate this experience for his son and future grandchildren.
