The Saint John Police are calling on young leaders to step forward and play a direct role in shaping the future of policing in the city. A new initiative, the Chief’s Youth Leadership Advisory Committee, is now seeking applications from residents aged 16 to 22.
This committee aims to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the city’s youth, a demographic the force acknowledges is currently under-represented in its advisory structure. According to a media release posted on their website, the goal is to create a platform for “invaluable input on past, current, and future aspects of policing.”
Members of the youth council will have the opportunity to advise the Chief of Police on issues affecting young people across Saint John, provide direct feedback on police interactions, and help foster better relationships through open and honest dialogue.
Key goals for the committee include:
- Advising the Chief on policing issues relevant to youth.
- Providing feedback on interactions between police and young people.
- Enhancing future policing initiatives through discussion.
- Fostering open communication to improve police-youth relationships.
- Creating a safe space for young leaders to share ideas for a safer community.
“The stronger the youth engagement, the stronger our community becomes,” the statement from the Saint John Police emphasizes.
The committee is scheduled to meet quarterly at the Saint John Police Headquarters at 1 Peel Plaza. The Chief of Police and Neighbourhood Officers will be in attendance at these meetings.
Interested individuals between the ages of 16 and 22 who want to make a difference are encouraged to apply. Those under the age of 18 will require parental consent to participate.
Applications are being accepted until September 30, 2025. More information and the application form can be found in the official announcement on the Saint John Police website.
