Fredericton’s north side is getting a massive entertainment complex. Sitansisk, also known as St. Mary’s First Nation, plans to build a 30,000 square foot casino, entertainment centre and hotel. The Wolastoq River Resort Casino comes with a price tag of $170 million.

The Three Phase Plan

The proposed project spans two city blocks along Union Street. A pedway over Cliffe Street connects the two main buildings. Sitansisk Chief Allan Polchies says the community will build the resort in three distinct phases. The first phase focuses on the casino and costs roughly $80 million. Later phases introduce an event space capable of hosting 1,000 guests and a hotel featuring about 100 rooms.

Economic Impact and Community Support

Chief Polchies views the project as a major economic driver for both the First Nation and the broader Fredericton area. “We’re going to be able to give a number of jobs back to our people,” Polchies told CBC News. “The economic impact, not only for Sitansisk St. Mary’s, but of course for the city of Fredericton as well.”

The success of the current Wolastoq Casino proves the demand exists. Once the new facility opens, the community plans to repurpose the existing casino space for seniors or youth programs.

City Approval and Timeline

The project requires millions in financial backing. Polchies confirms the investors behind the current Wolastoq Casino agreed to fund and operate the new resort. However, the development requires municipal approval. City of Fredericton spokesperson Shasta Stairs stated the project remains in the very early stages. The city has not made any decisions regarding zoning, engineering or the acquisition of city owned land.
