If you opted out of receiving a smart meter from NB Power, your monthly electricity bill is going up. Starting Tuesday, the utility company is adding a $4.65 fee to the bills of customers who refused the new technology.
According to a report from CTV News Atlantic, this new charge impacts roughly 14,800 customers across the province. This group represents a small fraction of the Crown corporation’s 400,000 direct and indirect customers.
The Cost of Manual Meter Reading
NB Power states the fee covers the logistical expenses of keeping older meters in service. Without a smart meter transmitting data automatically, the company must send workers to physically read the meters.
“These fees reflect the additional costs associated with maintaining manual meter reading and supporting a separate metering system for a relatively small number of customers,” NB Power spokesperson Elizabeth Fraser McAllister said in an emailed statement.
Customer Concerns
Many residents who rejected the smart meters did so over concerns regarding the accuracy and safety of the devices. In response to these worries, the utility company maintains that the technology is safe and beneficial.
“NB Power will continue to provide customers with fact based information about the smart meter program and the benefits it delivers for customers and the electricity system as a whole,” Fraser McAllister said.
