If you travel through the south end, you need to prepare for a major detour. The City of Saint John announced a significant infrastructure project that shuts down sections of Sydney Street and Britain Street for over three months.

Closure Details and Traffic Impacts
Starting Thursday, April 16, 2026, crews will completely close Sydney Street from Broad Street to St. James Street. They will also close Britain Street from Sydney Street to Carmarthen Street. This shutdown affects both directions and blocks all through traffic and pedestrian access 24 hours a day for 110 days.
During the construction period, the city converts Britain Street between Sydney Street and Carmarthen Street to two directional traffic. You will not be permitted to park on the street while work is underway. Crews maintain local access where possible and provide clear signage to direct you around the active construction zones.
What the Project Includes
This closure allows the city to perform a full street reconstruction. Underground work involves replacing the existing watermain and sanitary sewer, installing a brand new storm sewer, and renewing individual water and sewer service lines straight to your property line.
Once the underground utilities are secure, the surface gets a complete update. Crews build new concrete curbs and sidewalks, lay fresh roadway gravel and asphalt, and install new grass medians and updated signage. They also plant new trees to refresh the street aesthetics.
