A Monday night altercation in Uptown Saint John left one man dead and another in serious condition. Police arrested a 36 year old man at the scene and charged him with second degree murder and attempted murder.

Tragedy Outside Wellington Row Liquor Store
The Saint John Police Force responded to a stabbing outside the NB Liquor store on Wellington Row just before 8 p.m. Officers arrived to find two men unconscious with serious injuries. Bystanders and police administered first aid before ambulances transported the victims to the hospital.
A 46 year old man died from his injuries. A 44 year old man remains in the hospital in serious condition.
Police arrested the suspect at the scene. The 36 year old man sustained minor injuries. He appeared in court Tuesday afternoon to face charges of second degree murder and attempted murder. The judge remanded him into custody. He returns to court on March 24.
Community Leaders Respond
Tanya Greer is a spokesperson for NB Liquor. She confirmed three people were involved in the altercation outside the store.
“We are cooperating with the Saint John Police, who are investigating the incident,” Greer told CTV News.
Saint John Police Force Staff Sergeant Sarah Hobbs addressed the public following the violent event.
“What is concerning for the Saint John Police Force, any time there is any sort of crime that is happening within our city we take it very seriously,” Hobbs said. “Public safety is paramount for us and we would advise the public to be aware of your surroundings and to be mindful of where you are and those that you are interacting with.”
Deputy Mayor John MacKenzie expressed his concern over the recent violence.
“When this happens, it is very hard on us and it affects us deeply,” MacKenzie said. He noted the city relies on its new Community Safety Services Team to prevent similar incidents. “The role is really to defuse situations. If people are hanging around where they should not be and we are getting complaints, they will go and use that connection and relationship building to get them to move along.”
Second Weekend Stabbing
This fatal event marks the second violent altercation involving weapons in Uptown Saint John within 24 hours. On Sunday around 8:30 p.m., police responded to an incident involving three men on Sydney Street. Paramedics took two men to the hospital. Medical staff treated and released them. The suspect in that case remains at large.
Hobbs confirmed investigators found no connection between the two incidents.
