When you think of a traditional town crier, you picture an older gentleman with a booming voice. Summer Gallant is changing that image. The 25 year old recently became the first official town crier for Riverview, New Brunswick, and she is already taking her talents to the global stage.

This September, Gallant travels to Chester, England, to compete in the World Town Crier Tournament. According to a recent report by CBC News, she stands out as the youngest of the 25 competitors and one of only two women in the event.

Breaking the Mold in a Traditional Role

Gallant stepped into the role a couple of months ago after the community held formal auditions. She brings a lifelong passion for theatre to the position. She grew up in Riverview and participated in school productions and events at the Capitol Theatre in Moncton.

“I am Riverview born and raised, and I’ve always been very involved in the community,” Gallant told CBC. “People who know me would say, yeah, that’s the role for Summer.”

Stepping into a male dominated field presents unique challenges. Gallant acknowledges the physical differences in vocal projection.

“As a younger girl, it is kind of hard to get really deep in the chest and to really bellow,” she said. “Some of those guys are very loud and very, you know, they’re classic what you’d think when you hear town crier but I think I bring something to the table.”

Preparing for the World Stage

The three day tournament in England pits Gallant against seasoned veterans. One competitor, Chris Whyman from Kingston, Ontario, brings 42 years of experience to the contest. Judges evaluate participants on vocal power, clarity, showmanship, and audience engagement.

To prepare, Gallant practices vocal exercises. She appreciates that the competition allows participants to read from a scroll with pre written cries. Her announcements always begin with a theatrical and loud “Hear ye, hear ye.”

A Proud Community

Beyond her town crier duties, Gallant runs a local cafe and coordinates the Chocolate River Farmers Market. She wears her town crier uniform for official ceremonies and celebrations like Canada Day.

Riverview Mayor Andrew LeBlanc fully supports her international journey. He learned about the competition directly from Gallant.

“I think everybody else in that competition needs to up their game and get ready for hearing our town crier from the town of Riverview, because she does a phenomenal job,” LeBlanc said.
