The familiar ritual of scraping off an old licence plate sticker and applying a new one may soon be a thing of the past for New Brunswick drivers. The provincial government has introduced new legislation aimed at eliminating vehicle registration stickers for good.
According to a news release from the Government of New Brunswick, the proposed changes to the Motor Vehicle Act would remove the requirement for stickers on all vehicles, including personal cars, commercial trucks, and off-road vehicles, starting next spring if the bill passes.
A Modern Approach to Registration
The move is part of a broader effort to modernize government services and improve efficiency. While you will still need to renew your vehicle’s registration every year, enforcement officials will verify it electronically rather than by checking for a physical sticker.
“The proposed amendments reflect how technology has evolved and how we can make services more convenient for New Brunswickers,†said Aaron Kennedy, Minister of Local Government and minister responsible for Service New Brunswick. “Eliminating licence plate stickers will simplify the registration process, reduce costs and save people time.â€
How Renewals Will Work
To ensure you don’t forget to renew, Service New Brunswick will continue sending reminders by mail or email. A new text message notification option is also expected to be available in the coming weeks.
When it’s time to renew, you will have several options:
- Online: Renew through the Service New Brunswick website and choose to either print your registration certificate immediately at home or have it mailed to you.
- In-Person: Visit any Service New Brunswick service centre.
- By Phone: Call TeleServices at 1-888-762-8600.
The core requirement to keep your vehicle registration up to date remains, but the process is becoming more streamlined and less reliant on physical documents.
