New Brunswick Courtney Sarault continues to dominate the ice at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games. The speed skater secured a silver medal in the women’s 1000m short track event on Monday, marking her third podium finish of these Games.
Sarault previously captured bronze in the women’s 500m and silver in the mixed relay. While she aimed to complete a full medal collection with a gold, her performance solidifies her status as one of the province’s top athletes.
A Tense Final on the Ice
The 25-year-old skater led the pack for the first half of the nine-lap race. However, the dynamics shifted in the second half. Sarault slipped to second place and briefly fell to third before fighting back to cross the line in the silver medal position.

Sarault admitted to making a tactical error during the heat of the moment but expressed pride in her resilience.
“I feel good now,” Sarault told Olympic.ca following the race. “In the moment, I was a little bit down because I feel I made a little error in my last, I think it was maybe three laps or four laps to go. I kind of didn’t do the right decision in the heat of the moment… But you know, I skated with heart and I gave everything I had after that.”
Making Olympic History
This victory represents a massive leap forward from her Olympic debut at Beijing 2022, where she finished 11th in the same event. Sarault is now only the third Canadian to medal in the women’s 1000m, joining legends Nathalie Lambert and Kim Boutin.
Furthermore, Sarault and teammate Kim Boutin stand alone as the only Canadian women to win three short track medals at a single Olympic Games. Boutin was present at ice level to celebrate the achievement with Sarault.

Reflecting on her trajectory, Sarault noted the upward trend in her results.
“My last one was bronze. Silver, so we’re kind of, going up slowly but surely,” she said. “So yeah, I’m really proud of myself.”
Men’s Relay Team Advances
The success on the track extended to the men’s team as well. The Canadian relay squad, consisting of William Dandjinou, Maxime Laoun, Steven Dubois, and Félix Roussel, won their semifinal heat in the 5000m relay. This victory places them in the A final on Friday, offering Canada another shot at a medal.
