Jim Hulton is stepping behind the bench for his first season as head coach of the Saint John Sea Dogs. After spending 11 campaigns with the Charlottetown Islanders, Hulton is adjusting to his new surroundings and preparing the team for the upcoming Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League season.

According to a recent interview with SaltWire, Hulton admits the transition requires a big adjustment. He notes it feels different seeing the blue and white colours of the Sea Dogs instead of the black and gold he grew accustomed to in Charlottetown.

When joining a new organization, Hulton prefers to observe and listen. He wants to give every player a clean slate without any preconceived notions.

“For us coming in, we wanted to give everyone kind of a clean slate and not come in with a lot of precast notions on people,” Hulton said. “A lot of that is just trying to implement our systems and then sitting back and seeing how guys absorb it and how they process everything.”

Training camp presented unique challenges this year. Building events restricted ice time early in the camp. However, Hulton used this time for team building. Players spent significant time together away from the rink, and Hulton believes this bonding proves crucial as the season progresses.
