The Saint John City Market is celebrating 150 years of operation. As the oldest continuously operating farmers market in Canada, it survived a massive city fire and global pandemics. To mark this milestone, the market is undergoing significant changes to ensure it thrives for another century, according to a recent report from CTV News.
A Fresh Look and a Historic Bell
The market recently unveiled a rebranding campaign. You will notice a new tagline: a daily tradition since 1876. The historic market bell also received an upgrade. Workers refurbished the bell and moved it to a highly visible area. Market staff ring this bell at the start and end of every business day.

New Seating and Vendor Changes
Big changes are happening on the main floor. Crews are building a new indoor seating area. This construction requires the removal of the center aisle. Market management is actively relocating the vendors who previously occupied this space.
City Market manager Andrew MacDonald says the new layout improves the visitor experience.
“We really like the idea of having that indoor eating area so people can be in the market, and they can see what’s going on,” MacDonald says. “They can see their pals, their pals can see them, and also we can have that hustle and bustle in the main area.”
Art and Community Focus
The market is also getting a new centerpiece. John Hooper’s Time Piece sculpture is moving from Market Square to the City Market. This addition draws more locals back into the building.
MacDonald notes that consumer habits drive these updates.
“The way people spend their money is very different now,” MacDonald says. “We’re really looking at how we can capture the most people in this space and have the locals back in this space as much as possible.”
You will see various anniversary events over the coming weeks. Organizers will host a massive celebration this fall once all renovations wrap up.
