You know the songs. “The Hockey Song,” “Bud the Spud,” and “Sudbury Saturday Night” are woven into the Canadian identity. But you might not know that the man behind the music, Stompin’ Tom Connors, started his journey right here in Saint John.
While Sudbury boasts a massive bronze statue and Skinner’s Pond, P.E.I. claims his hometown, a group of locals believes it is time the Port City properly honours its native son. Born here on February 9, 1936, Connors spent his early, formative years in the city—a period that shaped his blue-collar identity.
Currently, the only nod to the legend in Saint John is a portrait on Canterbury Street. A local group led by Greg Hemmings, Scott Gogan, Mike Bravener, and Jason MacLean wants to change that with a permanent statue.

Council Gets on Board
The group recently took their pitch to Saint John Common Council. During the presentation, local musician Mike Bravener—known for his Stompin’ Tom tribute act—performed a song that reportedly moved Councillor Joanna Killen to tears.
“The world is hard and Stompin’ Tom is still here, through you,” Killen said following the performance.
The pitch was a success. Council voted unanimously to support the project in principle. They referred the matter to the civic commemoration standing committee and directed city staff to work with Hemmings House to identify a suitable location.

Location and Funding
With the city’s blessing secured, the real work begins. The organizers need to raise funds for the monument. While they are leaning toward a bronze statue for its longevity, Hemmings noted they are open to other materials depending on costs.
As for where you might see Stompin’ Tom standing tall, several locations are under consideration:
- Along Harbour Passage
- Near Market Square
- The site of the Barbour’s General Store at the foot of King Street
Hemmings believes this project is about more than just a statue; it is about inspiring the community. “It’s time to really celebrate the Canadians that really helped bring us together as a nation and Stompin’ Tom is one of those folks”.
