Give Your Christmas Tree a Second Life
Once the holiday season wraps up, you might be wondering what to do with your Christmas tree. The City of Saint John is making it easy and free for residents to dispose of their natural trees responsibly with its annual drop-off program.
According to an official notice from the City of Saint John, the program will run from January 1 to January 11, 2025. Before you head out, make sure to remove all decorations, including tinsel, lights, and ornaments, from your tree.

Drop-Off Locations Across the City
Four convenient locations will be available for you to drop off your tree. The City ensures these sites will be plowed and maintained for safety. Look for the designated drop-off area at each location.
- North: Charles Gorman Arena – 80 University Avenue
- West: Peter Murray Arena – 711 Dever Road
- East: Forest Hills Ball Field – 651 Westmorland Road
- South/Central Peninsula: Old Sugar Refinery – 330 Charlotte Street
For those using the South/Central Peninsula location, please note that the specific drop-off site is at the end of Charlotte Street and Vulcan Street. Do not leave trees at the Bulk Terminal Truck Entrance or other areas on Port Saint John property.
What If You Can’t Make It to a Drop-Off Site?
If you are unable to transport your tree to one of the designated sites, you have another option. You can prepare it for your regular compost collection by following these steps:
- Remove all decorations and trim.
- Cut off the branches.
- Cut the trunk and branches into pieces no longer than four feet and no more than two inches in diameter.
- Place the pieces in your compost cart for your regular collection day.
