A wildfire continues to burn at Base Gagetown after artillery training ignited flames on Wednesday. If you live near the area, you can rest easy knowing officials confirm there is no risk to the public, military members, or civilian employees.

Artillery Training Sparks Flames
The fire started around noon on Wednesday in the northeastern portion of the base range and training area. Capt. Robynn Still, a public affairs officer for the base, stated the fire began during routine exercises.
“The wildfire was started by artillery shooting into Lawfield Impact Area,” Still said. “As artillery fire is conducted under observation, the fire would have been detected very quickly after ignition.”
The active fire spans 12 hectares and has burned a total of 25 hectares so far. The flames remain confined to a remote section of the base with no residential buildings nearby. Officials report zero injuries.
Suppression Efforts Underway
Base commander Erik Esselaar confirmed crews are actively fighting the fire. Helicopter water bucket operations took place Thursday afternoon to control the spread. Fire crews on the ground continue to implement suppression measures.
Base leadership suspended all training activities in the immediate vicinity of the wildfire as a strict precaution. Teams will monitor and manage the situation until the fire is fully extinguished.
