New Brunswickers now have a new way to see a doctor online. The provincial government launched Virtual Care NB today. This platform replaces eVisitNB and offers virtual consultations seven days a week. You can connect with a healthcare professional through video, telephone, or chat.
Who Can Use the Service
Health Minister John Dornan says the service supports people without a primary care provider. It also helps patients who cannot reach their regular doctor and need immediate care for minor issues. Dornan stated in a news release that the service is an important step toward building a more integrated and patient focused healthcare system.
What Virtual Care NB Treats
Virtual Care NB handles common illnesses, minor injuries, and infections. You can also use the service to renew prescriptions, schedule follow up appointments, and get lab referrals. The service runs daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Patients book appointments for the same day or the next day.
How to Book an Appointment
You need a valid New Brunswick Medicare card to use the service. The province set up three main entry points for patients. You can visit the Virtual Care NB webpage, use the MyHealthNB website and mobile app, or call Telecare 811. The online symptom checker and Telecare 811 act as the front door for the service. They evaluate your needs and direct you to the right care option.
The Switch to Foundever
Virtual Care NB officially replaces eVisitNB. The province signed a two year contract worth 26 million dollars with Foundever to run the new system. This decision faced public pushback. S and P Global recently downgraded the credit rating for Foundever. Some virtual care nurses also voiced concerns that the new platform limits their ability to provide quality care and reduces the number of patients they can see each day. Dornan defended the move. He called Foundever a trusted partner that has operated in New Brunswick for 28 years and currently manages the 811 Telecare service.
