Uptown Saint John is getting a fresh splash of colour. The Uptown Box Art Program returns for its fifth year to transform everyday utility boxes into public masterpieces. Uptown Saint John Inc. leads this initiative to beautify public spaces, deter graffiti, and showcase local artistic talent.

What to Expect at the 2026 Celebration
This year features two new utility box transformations. You will also see 18 local students present their artistic interpretations of the theme Integration.
The community will gather to celebrate the unveiling on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The event takes place in King’s Square from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. You can watch students complete live painting on their canvases while enjoying local entertainment. Once finished, organizers will turn these canvases into vibrant banners. Crews will install these banners along Princess Street for the summer months.
A History of Beautifying Uptown
The program launched in 2022 when local artist Fabiola Martinez painted a city traffic gearbox. The community loved the new visual energy. The initiative expanded in 2023 to include four traffic boxes and student canvas projects. Organizers turned those early canvases into banners for Prince William Street.
In 2024, the program partnered with Saint John Energy to transform a large utility box at a major intersection. Budget constraints in 2025 scaled the project back to a single installation at the top of King Street. Now, the 2026 program brings back the popular student banner project and multiple box transformations.

Why Public Art Matters
Artistically treated boxes effectively deter vandalism and graffiti. The Uptown Box Art Program also supports community placemaking. It brings creativity and local stories into shared spaces. Supporting these initiatives helps create a welcoming environment for the independently owned businesses that make up the Uptown core.
