A new plaque on Campobello Island celebrates the enduring partnership between Canada and the United States. The ceremony took place just hours after a major trade deal between the two nations collapsed.

Marking the Longest International Border

The plaque recognizes the United States and Canada International Boundary Survey and the longest international border in the world. You will find the new installation at the Mulholland Point Lighthouse within Roosevelt Campobello International Park.

The lighthouse overlooks Lubec in Maine and the Franklin D. Roosevelt International Bridge. This location serves as the easternmost land crossing along the 8892 kilometre boundary.

The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the American Society of Civil Engineers partnered to plan this placement over several years. This plaque stands as the first of many planned for the border.

“Everybody kind of jumped really quick and thought this was the perfect location,” said Benjamin Smith, president elect for the Maine section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Focusing on Unity During Tense Times

The installation happened during a highly contentious moment in relations between the two countries. Speakers at the ceremony subtly noted the timing but kept the focus firmly on cooperation.

“It is quite an achievement and we forget that amongst the politics, if you will,” said Bruce Higgins, a member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering national history committee.

Jon Southern serves as the superintendent of Roosevelt Campobello International Park. He believes the ceremony sends an important message to the public.

“It is a very fitting time to actually go ahead with this,” Southern said. “I think the world needs to hear about the fact that people are continuing to get along. This represents all the values of this park. It represents unity, friendship, and mutual respect which is something we have at the park, with American and Canadian employees working side by side.”
