“We used to provide, I’ll say, a base amount and have to augment that every year,” Dornan told CBC News. The new approach allows Feed NB to plan ahead.

Feed NB executive director Stéphane Sirois welcomes the change. “There is a recognition that we’re in a crisis in the food banking network, and we needed predictable, stable funding,” Sirois said. The money directly improves the quality of food hitting the shelves at 68 food banks and community kitchens across the province. These locations see about 50,000 visits every month.

Sirois wants to move beyond basic staples. “We want to make sure that everyone that needs help, that they don’t just eat mac and cheese and tomato soup,” he said. The funding allows the nonprofit to purchase fresh meats and produce.

Supporting Local Farmers

This investment also strengthens ties with local agriculture. About a dozen New Brunswick farmers currently sell their products to Feed NB. With guaranteed funds, the organization can secure contracts early in the year. Farmers know exactly what to grow and can plan their harvest accordingly.
