New Brunswick drivers can say goodbye to those little coloured squares on their licence plates. Starting April 1, 2026, the province no longer requires vehicle registration stickers.
The provincial government announced the change to modernize services and cut administrative costs. You still need to renew your vehicle registration every year. The new rule simply removes the physical sticker from the process. This update applies to all passenger, commercial, and off road vehicles.
A Shift to Digital Verification
Law enforcement officers now verify your registration status electronically. They scan your licence plate to confirm your vehicle is legally registered. If you already have a valid sticker on your plate, you do not need to peel it off. The province simply will not issue new ones after April 1.
Local Government Minister Aaron Kennedy, who oversees Service New Brunswick, highlighted the benefits of the update.
“Removing licence plate registration stickers is a practical step that reflects how technology has evolved and how we deliver services today,” Kennedy said in a government release. “This change will make the process more convenient for New Brunswickers while simplifying the administrative process and reducing costs.”
How to Renew Your Registration
You have several options to renew your vehicle registration. You can complete the process online, visit a Service New Brunswick centre in person, or call TeleServices at 1 888 762 8600.
When you renew online, the system allows you to print your registration certificate immediately after payment. You can also choose to have the government mail the document to your home.
To help you remember your renewal date, Service New Brunswick offers reminders by mail, email, or text message. You select your preferred method when you renew.
