The Saint John Fire Department is kicking off Fire Prevention Week 2026 from October 4 to 10. This year’s focus targets a growing household hazard: lithium ion batteries. Under the theme Charge Into Safety, officials urge you to evaluate how you power up your everyday devices.

From cell phones and laptops to power tools and electric bikes, lithium ion batteries keep daily life moving. While generally safe, they pose serious fire risks when damaged or paired with low quality charging equipment.
Safety Tips for Lithium Ion Batteries
You reduce your risk of a battery fire by following a few simple practices:
- Use the original charger or a manufacturer approved replacement.
- Charge devices on hard flat surfaces like a desk or bare floor. Never leave a charging device on a bed, couch, or pillow.
- Unplug your electronics as soon as they reach a full charge.
- Charge larger items like electric bikes and scooters outdoors when possible. Never let them block your exits.
- Stop using any device immediately if it becomes hot, swells, leaks, smokes, smells strange, or makes hissing and popping sounds.
- Keep charging devices nearby when flying and report any battery failures to the flight crew right away.
The Saint John Fire Department also reminds you to test your smoke alarms and practice your home fire escape plan. These steps save lives.
