The City of Saint John is calling on residents to acknowledge the ongoing violence experienced by Indigenous women, girls, and Two Spirit people. On May 5, 2026, the city will host a community gathering to mark the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit People.

The City of Saint John partnered with the Saint John Arts Centre to host the event. Natasha Ward, a member of the Metepenagiag Mi’kmaq Nation and a dedicated advocate for MMIWG2S+ families, will lead the gathering. Ward grounds her awareness work in truth and focuses on the urgent calls for action and justice.
The gathering features drumming by Connor Macfarlane of the Flying Dust Nêhiyaw Nation. Attendees also have access to a healing smudge.
